A Global Culture to Fight Extremism: An Analysis
An Examination of a Global Culture to Combat Extremism Maajid Nawaz begins a summary of the events surrounding Islamic extremism based on a personal experience in a speech titled "A Global Culture to Fight Extremism." His primary focus is on describing the cultural perspectives that plague Islamic countries and how some of these ancient beliefs and ideas influence modern society. In this regard, the author provides a brief overview of the history of societies and their beliefs from the Middle Ages to the Present. The issue with these philosophies and narratives is that they are linked to terrorism, among other things, due to a lack of political correctness, limited democratic choices, and the ideology of resistance. Moreover, the speaker asserts that the extremists within terrorism organizations neither lack education nor suffer from poverty. He identifies the main setback as the lack of a genuine democratic representation in the grassroots levels. The denial of rights turns into a gradual build-up that fosters a violent movement against authoritarian rule. These situations are well-represented in Arab uprisings that have been a common scene within the 21st century.
From a personal perspective, I believe that the narrator is justified to offer insight into the topic since he is among the few individuals with first-hand experience. Nawaz synthesizes his points into a logical manner and backs up his claims with evidence. Additionally, he provides a background for his assertions and clearly shows the validity of his arguments with reliable case studies. In this regard, I agree with his points and have no doubts in his assertions.
I believe in the speaker’s belief that the world is shifting from towards a new age where philosophies, shared among groups can be transmitted across borders. I am intrigued by the fact that the narrator saw that the level of sophistication used in extremist organizations can come in handy for individuals in their day to day endeavors. Moreover, I have been able to reflect on the true power of democracy and consider myself as lucky to live in a country established on the principles of democracy. The video will influence my decisions in my student and work life when interacting with others, and know how to network with individuals using ideas rather than ethnic bases.
