A Reflection Paper
The small group dynamics theory
The small group dynamics theory investigates the fusion and disintegration that occurs within micro-communities. Many micro-communities go through a transition and the majority of the participants go through self-transformation. Members' socio-psychological dispositions appear to change during their interactions with other members, and as a result, internal and external inconsistencies add to the overall self-transformation process.
Lack of human connection in the group
I had no human connection in a group of five people and most of the members find it difficult to accept the decisions of others. As a matter of fact, the members did not demonstrate any support towards the choices made by either of the members including the choice of the topic and icon to be discussed. The minimum communication which was poor, inhibited the development of a conducive environment for enhancing group dynamics and therefore, we ended up disagreeing on major issues in the group. The communication, being a major element of the group integration could have gone better if a leader of the members had been choices so as to create a channel through which crucial decisions could be made.
Attainment of goals despite poor dynamics
Notably, despite the lack of proper communication within the group, the goals set were attained. Attaining the goals set was the sole purpose of forming the group and therefore, having achieved the goal, it was possible to conclude that it was the one thing that had gone well.
Poor dynamics and its causes
The poor dynamics in the group were caused by various factors including evaluation apprehension, blocking, and weak leadership. The weak leadership was experienced in such a way that there was no appointed leader and neither of the members was willing to step in to provide a sense of direction. Similarly, the views presented by different members, like my suggestion of Taj Mahal, were turned down and therefore created a feeling that they were harshly judged. The withdrawal of some of the members denoted a form of blocking in such a way that we could not get all the views of the members since most of them left, leaving only two members to complete the task.
The need for proper leadership and role of a transformational leader
As a member of the group, I was mandated with the task to provide my views on the choice of the topic which was based on either a famous place or person according to the instructions from the professor. Since most of the group members bailed out before the completion of the task, I think I could have taken up the role of the transformational leader to help coordinate the duties of the group so as to attain shared values with the other members to prevent free riding within the group. As a result, I came to understand that the success of healthy integration and interpersonal relationship in a group or any organization is based on the proper leadership of the group in which every member feels appreciated and listened to so as to create a subsystem in which the tasks are realigned to focus on attaining the set goals. Therefore, since the group failed to retain most of the members and the poor communication that contributed to the little agreement, I would rate the experience as poor.
