Abortion in the United States
Abortion rates in the United States have been declining over time, falling from 1.4 million in 1990 to 699,202 in 2012. These high figures are due to the fact that abortion is legal under the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which was ratified in 1973. (CNN, 2016). The most popular type of abortion is vacuum aspiration, which is normally performed as part of a surgical operation thirteen weeks into the pregnancy. It is estimated that almost half of all births in the United States are unintended, with four out of every ten being terminated. On a daily basis, they are more than 3,000 abortions done within the United States. This makes up approximately twenty two percent of all pregnancies in the United States. The majority of these women are under the age of 30.
The cases of abortion in the United States are mainly as a result of unwanted pregnancies amongst the young women and the ease of access to abortion clinics. In some cases, however, the woman might have been raped or the pregnancy may endanger the woman’s life. In both cases, medical practitioners should not easily direct the woman to abort that child. They should however encourage the woman to keep the baby and defy the surrounding circumstances. This is mainly because it is not justifiable to use such an act as a way of rectifying such cases or such risks (Brown, 2013). An unborn baby has life in its existing form and therefore terminating it would be taking away human life. This also violates civil rights as such babies are usually deprived of the right to live.
