Active and Passive Students
All students cannot be the same; the difference is brought about by their attitude, and the amount of energy that they put in their academic or co-curriculum activities. There are two wonderful types of learners in an education set up; passive and active. The college students attend school with the same goal in thought to build on their future. Each type of student pursues their training differently. The differences are brought about by elements such as environment, and peer groups. Active students are academic oriented while passive college students are work towards their satisfaction which is far from education. Passive college students are lazy students who would rather concentrate on satisfying their leisure activities instead of concentrating on academics. They procrastinate a lot and never meet assignment deadlines. Active students are very diligent and have a positive attitude towards their studies. This paper compares and contrasts active versus passive students.
The main area that brings about the difference between passive and active student is personality. An active student possesses the type A personality, which makes them highly competitive, time conscious, ambitious, aggressive, and workaholics who are determined to achieve their educational goals through multitasking. The students never procrastinate and are good at meeting deadlines; they are highly frustrated if they fail. They tend to be over achievers and will pay attention to even the slightest idea and concept. They are teacher attention seekers and like approval from their educators and peers. In contrast, passive students possess a personality that is exactly the opposite of an active student. They have the type B personality, a type which does not care. They attend classes just because they are supposed to but are not emotionally involved in the classroom activities. They are lazy, relaxed, patient, and easy going. They are never bothered with academic pressure and never meet assignment deadlines.

The second factor that shows the difference is their school involvement. Active students are involved all round in their quest for academic brilliance as compared to passive students. Active student attends their lectures on time and a daily basis. They are actively involved in classroom activities by asking and answering questions. They form group discussions, consult with their professors regularly and are even involved in co-curriculum activities such as sports and clubs. They are involved in overall school activities including politics. They are academic attentive, have good grades and qualify for valuable scholarships. An active learner reads ahead of the teacher and is self-motivated, to understand concepts they are being taught better (Petty, 2014).They are mostly found in the library studying during free hours and are ever busy. On the other hand, passive students are not very much involved in an academic set up. They only do what they are required to do without taking an extra amount of work by themselves. The passive student does not attend lectures regularly when they do they are usually late, or they are not involved in class activities. They are co-curriculum oriented, active in sports and athletics. They do shoddy work by preferring shortcuts which might eventually lead them to a possibility of dropping out of school; their grades are below average. They typically wait to be told what to do and are not self-driven.
The third factor is the amount of energy that the students put in their work. Active students apply a significant amount of energy while performing any task as compared to passive students. Active students have a sense of urgency while undertaking anything, so they make sure that all their energy is supplied to come up with the best. They are never distracted in class and will try as much as possible to avoid destructions in class or during studies. Nevertheless, a passive student has no urgency when going about his or her activities; hence they use the least energy in doing their school assignments and work, they would rather rush and relax.
The fourth factor that differentiates students is their attitude. An active learner has a very positive attitude towards learning and school overall. They are motivated to gather as much knowledge as they can. They try their best in doing everything even difficult concepts. However passive students are the exact opposite. They do not care what other people think about them.
Even though there are many differences between passive and active students, similarities also exist. Passive and active learners are driven by one force, academic achievement. They all attend school to be professionals someday; one thing that motivates them is that they are in pursuit to graduate. It is in the interest of every student to pass any academic level that they attend. However; the difference is realized at the content and the type of motivation that drives the student.
In conclusion, every educator is required to understand their students by identifying their weakness and strengths to help them in achieving their academic goals. The differences can provide a foundation for such teachers. Passive and active students should all be involved in every educational activity.
