Adoption of Clinical Decision Support Systems
Clinical Decision Support is a measure that enhances the effectiveness of the decisions in health related issues. Through CDS, information about the patients and the clinical knowledge is put in a well-organized manner thus improving the healthcare delivery. The clinical knowledge is derived from the intelligently processed data regarding the patients. The delivery of this information can utilize various tools such as the filtered data display and alerts. At its simplest form, Clinical Decision Support enables a physician to have handy information regarding drug allergies and the best forms of prescriptions to give. Although such an alert is considered simple, it goes a long way in improving the quality of care. CDS is intricately intertwined with the Clinical Quality Measures as well as other up to date resources and interactive libraries such as the Cochrane Library, all in an attempt to take health care to new heights (Grol 503-504).
The adoption of the Clinical Decision Support systems has been met with a number of hurdles in the medical field. It is worth noting that to be functional, the CDS must have a form of integration with the clinical workflow of a healthcare organization. The complexity associated with this process results in a challenge that is difficult to find a solution for. It has also been noted that a number of CDS systems function as a stand-alone thus hindering interoperability with software that deal with health records and reporting.Besides, the generation of a large amount of data that need to be incorporated into the system results to an overwhelming task of integration and maintenance of the information (Jasper 327-329). These issues can, however, be addressed through the use of computer experts to ensure maximum benefits are reaped from the CDS' noble innovation.
