1830-1839
It is a census year, and the numbers reveal that 18.1% of the population is black. African-American delegates from five states are in Philadelphia for the first of many National Negro Conventions to discuss initiatives to curb slavery in the South and racial discrimination in the North. North Carolina enacts a statute to ban educating of slaves. Efforts by people like Nat Turner, William Garrison, and Jarena Lee are significantly pushing for the freedom of blacks (Wright). The formation of societies and institutions is also of great importance. Examples of include the Female Anti-Slavery Society, the American Anti-Slavery Society, the Oberlin College among others. African free schools have been incorporated into the New York public schools. South Carolina has banned the educating of slaves. Texas has declared independence from Mexico, their Constitution recognizes slavery, so it’s going to be difficult for black people to live there. The Philadelphia Vigilance is being organized to help fugitive slaves. Pennsylvania has refused black voters. An American vessel has towed the Amistad, which has 53 slaves aboard
1840-1849
It is another census year, and it shows that the number of blacks is about 2,873,648. Frederick Douglass has led a successful campaign against Rhode Island’s proposed Dorr Constitution. The U.S. court of supreme has advised that the Americans are obligated to help in the recapture of fugitive slaves. People like William Brown, Sojourner Truth, William Lane, Harriet Tubman and others have joined in the push for the betterment of the lives of the minority. Others like Macon Allen and David Peck are overcoming significant hurdles. The Legislative Committee of the Provisional Government of Oregon has enacted a black exclusion law. Texas has now been confirmed as a state in the U.S. Missouri has also banned the education of slaves
1850-1859
The recently conducted census reveals that the number of free blacks has increased from the previous 386,293 to 433,807. Martin Delany, Harriet Beecher, William Neil and Harriet Wilson use literature to convey the message that black people should be treated as equals. Today Sojourner Truth gave an impassioned speech at the Women’s Rights Convention in Ohio. A second hospital was opened for us in Augusta, Georgia, the Jackson Street Hospital. 1860-1869
Another census reveals that of the 4,441,830 black people in the U.S. 488,070 free African-Americans. Today on November 26, Abraham Lincoln, has been elected as the first president. Congress has passed an act that bars corporate slave owners from re-enslaving runaway slaves. The first all-black military unit was formed in New Orleans. A huge number of blacks are fighting in the civil war. The 54th Massachusetts assaults Fort Wagner but is unsuccessful. Abraham Lincoln has signed the 13th amendment outlawing slavery
1860-1869
The census showed that though the percentage of blacks has reduced their number has grown to 4,888,009. Congress has passed the Civil Rights Act of 1971
1870-1880
The census of 1880 reveals that the blacks are 13.1% of the population 6,580,793 people
