Alice Al Khatib Work
Alice Al-Khatib is a native of Syria where she was born the year 1982. Khatib joined the University of Damascus the place she majored in the Sculpture as a subcategory of art. After successfully graduating from Damascus University in 2005, she has majored in the collective exhibitions like the Beirut collective distribution that was carried out in Damascus. Under the Royal British Society of Sculptors, Khatib managed to existing her work "Austrich." Austrich was made from a variety of cloth that includes, fiberglass, plastic, iron, plastic, resin and mixed media among different material. Khatib's creation of "Austrich" is a cosmopolitan form of artworks that tackle the general nature of humanity.
Alice's "Austrich" which is fairly massive measuring 45cmx75cmx20cm primarily uses mixed media and entails polyester, iron, and fiberglass among other components. The end product is a combination of different colors and mediums like mixed media and exposed iron in some areas. Although Khatib states that the deficiency in the material to use was one major reason for the use of the mixed media, she equally contends that, the material that she used suits her depiction and intentions of the artwork. Khatib stats that the main meaning of her work is the duality of the human nature (Khatib 2017). Through the use of the different medium, she wishes to explain how the psyche of the human beings shifts from one extreme of transcendence and humanitarian tenets to that of utmost brutality as evidenced in the wars and conflicts that humans encounter daily.
The main role of the sculpture was to communicate the human flaws and inconsistencies in the showroom through the artistic distortion of the ostrich and the medium. Just like in many of Khatib's works, she uses a lot of symbolism and personification inhere works. She prefers to use the sculptures of animals that evoke some similar character traits to that of human beings. Khatib states the driving force behind her creation is the everlasting struggle that has engulfed the human psyche which according to her creation is in a distorted state (Khatib 2017). Through her creation, Khatib explains further that, the duality of the human nature both the physical and the psychological is imbalanced and hence seeks a form of equilibrium and mediation of the self. She further states that human beings are busy living their lives carelessly while ignoring the artistic and creative nature and inclinations of the psychological and physical natures that are their driving forces.
A depiction of Khatib’s Austrich
Khatib's work has a mixed contextual and cultural affiliation and hence it depicts the overall psychological, religious, political and historical behaviors and inclinations of human beings. The choice of the ostrich as the desired animal for the sculpture equally communicates and emphasizes the duality and lack of concern of human beings to address the basic societal needs just like the ostrich which buries its head in the sand. Khatib's creation is characterized by variations in the medium and various form of distortions which relate to the distorted nature of the human mind and emotions towards the contemporary psychological and physical occurrences. Khatib's works cut across the different societal and cultural contexts and hence are applicable to different cultures and time periods as she states that the nature of human existence and interaction has not changed over the years but rather displays a form of consistency and immobility.
