alpha
1.What does setting alpha to.05 mean?
When alpha is set to 0.05, the likelihood of a false null hypothesis is 5%. It graphically depicts the magnitude of the deviation from the null hypothesis value.
2. Describe your null hypothesis. Another hypothesis?
H0 is the null hypothesis.
The null hypothesis asserts that the sampled students' questionnaire mean score is less than or equal to 70.
Hi: >70 as an alternative hypothesis.
According to the alternative hypothesis, the mean questionnaire score for the sampled students is more than 70.
3.Does this represent a one-tailed or two-tailed hypothesis?
The hypothesis is one tailed due to the right tail outcome from the alternative hypothesis. Moreover, the sample mean and population mean predict a positive outcome of the calculated values.
4.What is the critical z?
Converting the mean to a z score.
A comparison of the sample mean to the population mean is made with the knowledge of the standard deviation using the equation;
/ σM
Where:
σM = σ/√n
x= sample mean
µ= population mean
σ = population standard deviation
n = sample size
z = (75-70) ÷ (12÷√36)
z = 5÷ (12÷6)
z = 5/2
z = 2.5
5. Calculate the obtained z. Do you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis?
The z score is 2.5 and the significance was 0.05.
According to the z score table of right tail the critical z is 0.4946. Therefore, since the value 0.4946 falls in the acceptable region in the distribution, the null hypothesis is rejected whereas the alternative hypothesis is accepted.
6.State in words what you have found.
It is positive that showing the film to the students changes their attitude towards the chronically mentally ill patients. The students’ attitude improved after watching the film just like the alternative hypothesis suggested. Having their attitude change by increasing from a mean of 70 to 75 was a positive impact.
