At the establishing of the great war, most of the Americans failed to involve themselves since they perceived that it had begun in Europe and the United States wished not to play a part in it. With time, the war extensively affected them with a significant impact on those who lived in the south. Once the Americans entered the war, they mobilized guys into active military duty which precipitated a massive migration of the African Americans to the Northern cities while the whites moved to urban facilities to look for industrial work.
As the war continued, the African American felt the need for democracy in ensuring that they were not discriminated. Therefore, when Wilson issued a declaration of war against Germany, the took up the opportunity to bring justice to the United States. They saw it as an opportunity to fight or their civil rights through the test of the American commitment to bringing ideal democracy to the country (Norton 755). They were also involved in the war as a way of demonstrating their patriotism as equal citizens of the nation.
Conversely, there were dramatic changes generated for the minority groups during the great war. The African Americans were drafted into the military so as to serve under the command of white officers within the racially segregated units (Norton 754). Some were recruited into the rural agricultural factories in to offer manual labor. They, therefore, joined the great migration from the rural south northward leading to a change in social and political position of the state (Norton 759). At the end of the war, the African American activists indicated that there was hope for peace though Wilson saw it as a grievous injury to civilization.
