America's Best Image? All of Them
A popular editor, Peter Suderman, in his article "America's Best Picture? The New York Times discusses the failure of the Oscars to portray the real representation of the United States and the American people in the films at the Academy Awards. In comparison to what is happening at the Academy, he hopes to convince the reader to consider the difference between what the true intent of the Oscar Academy Awards is. In a sarcastic tone, he engages the audience of cultural romantics who, based on the artistic meaning conveyed, perceive the nature of art. He begins by vividly describing the elements that American movies were expected to contain. He draws a compelling argument by comparing the film “Forest Gump” to the film “Saving Private Ryan” both of which he posits that they tend to define the United States and the American people. Through contrast, the author appeals to the logos element by demonstrating the differences in the various movies that are proposed to be the best by the Oscars. For example, he uses movies like “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “American Hustle” to demonstrate the deviation of the Hollywood from the expected portrayal of the country and the people. He says, “Hollywood went from examining the national character to examining its own” (Suderman).
He alludes to “Moonlight” movie by noting that the story revolves around “A gay, black protagonist…” and drug dealer (Suderman). The sarcastic tone and the imagery he uses evoke the idea that the franchise is focused on examining a particular culture rather than creating an inclusive United States culture. The author further, through diction, appeals to the emotions of the readers by pointing out that the nominees at the Oscars Awards are focused on a subculture rather than the culture accepted by the rest of the country. He states that “America is a nation of both individualism and pluralism” indicating that no single movie provides the viewer with “what America looks like” (Suderman). As a result, he enrages the reader who values diverse cultures in the United States and disliking of the possible discrimination of other cultures.
Conclusively, Suderman, through contrasting and vivid description, he manages to draw the attention of the reader to the fact that the Oscars Awards have failed to observe the quality of the American life and rather focused on developing the image of the industry.
