An Application to College
As a young girl at school, I saw all the girls wearing black hijab cloaks and uniforms as the kids wearing jeans and brilliant colorful shirts. It was my first meeting with a highly discriminatory society that treated women as members of the second class. Many barriers that women face by breaking norms and law need to be resolved. The life of a woman is regulated in every respect. Women need to consider the guidelines of society according to their clothing, their classes and their professional status. We have no liberty to live as sovereign and independent bodies. From when we are born, we are seen as permanent dependents of our male relatives. Whether one wants to get a passport, travel, get a passport, work, or go out, she has to seek permission from her father, husband, or any other male “guardian.” (Fun Fact: The law in Iran allows a father to kill his daughter).
A woman can be an excellent athlete, but it is only through her husband’s permission or approval that she would be allowed to travel to overseas tournaments and competitions. For example, Iran’s national football team captain, Niloufar Ardalan’s husband forbade her from joining her teammates in a tournament in Malaysia. As a woman in Iran, I am prohibited from participating in day-to-day activities. I am not allowed to ride a bike, take my cat or dog for a walk, enter a coffee shop or work in one, even laughing in public is prohibited since these are considered as flamboyant behavior which might attract attention.
Even though I have been brought up in a coastal city, I have never enjoyed swimming in the sea. Similarly, I cannot choose what I wish to wear. If I wear anything with bright colors, skinny jeans leggings, a hat, jewelry, nail polish, boots or conspicuous makeup, I would likely be punished. It is an offense not to cover my hair, and if I do so, I would be in trouble with the morality police. They are the same as the regular police. The only difference is, they are tasked with policing women who wear anything going against the acceptable standards. If found guilty, the woman would be arrested, forcibly taken to the police van, and taken to the police station, not including the harassment and brutality they make you go through. The morality police are tools used by this oppressive system to keep women relegated in their homes and have minimum participation in the society.
The discrimination against women is always evident. Men have the superior educational facilities, better teachers, and resources in their schools, given autonomy, and offered almost all professional opportunities even in situations where women are more competent. In the university, more chairs are reserved for boys. In the society, they are treated better and receive more respect. For instance, the laws and customs allow them to have up to four wives.
What I am trying to point out is, I do not wish to have the same life as the women in my society. I did not have the authority or opportunity to change the conditions I was natured in, but now all this is possible. I aim to achieve my utmost potential. To me, every chance I am presented with is golden, and I always try to make the most out of it. However, as a woman in Iran, the society will ever deprive you of your courage and ambitions with the aim of stopping you from achieving personal strength and independence. If a woman tries to do something new or goes against the standard norms, she is met with high resistance.
