Animal and Environmental Ethics
Animal studies are a procedure which has severely abused animal rights in the development of medicine. While many people are calling for the benefits to be greater than the damage, the outcome is that many animals end up suffering and have a dramatic reduction in their quality of life. If experiments violate the rights of the animal, then such behavior is morally wrong. Therefore, the point of violating animal rights for humanity is irrelevant and should be rejected. Such a view is held by those that affirm anthropocentrism which highlights that moral standing should only be granted to human beings (Cochrane 21). One of the ethical principles violated is the nonmaleficence principles which entails that research ought not to be done in a way that inflicts harm to other species. It is well known to the researchers of the impact of these tests as they are cognizant of the negative long term effects that animals will be subjected to. In correcting such a violation the principles of justice ought to be applied as animals as well as humans have a right that need to be protected. Such a view is in line with Albert Schweitzer view that a moral standing ought to be granted to all living things (Scott 19). Therefore there needs to be alternative methods devised to ensure that no one suffers. Replacing animal testing is not meant to mean that humans are to be subjected to risks, rather it is a way that will ensure that humaneness in our science is upheld. A possible alternative would include the use of cell cultures, computer models and even using human tissues.
