Are Test Scores a Good Way of Judging Any Student’s Efficiency?
According to the Program for International Student Assessment's (PISA) 2012 findings, the United States of America ranks thirty-first among participating nations. The United States of America brags about keeping the principles for educational excellence and ranks marginally higher than other countries that are also evolving in this region. The high stakes on test statistics are gradually pushing American educational expectations to the point that classrooms are losing value. The test score has become a common instrument for evaluating a student's performance. The subject is still fraught with many controversies as of `efficiencies of the test scores in the judgment of student efficiencies. The proponents of this course argue that standardized test scores are essential and can be effective in judging student efficiency because of their objectivity, accountability and comparability. Opponents of this course on the other hand tests scores are an obsession which students should not be subjected to because they are an impediment to rational learning processes (Petersons). Research, however, shows that the evidence demonstrated by these positive claims are safe and true but run out of context in extreme cases. Test scores provide a basis for evaluating the capabilities of a student and it solely depends on the institution and the course instructor.
Enough information is available to back up the evidence that test scores are a way of judging any students’ efficiency. In most occasions, students themselves don’t determine the number of test scores they are subjected to. According to Unigo test scores are important in that they allow colleges solve the puzzle in determining which applicant students will perform well if admitted. On the flip side, the tests score are mere puzzles which in essence does not define an individual student. Uningo insists that test scores can classify one as good, really good, or average but the point and fact still remain that the test scores don’t make students be more important than they already are. In addition, the best test scores in most colleges are optional.
Many institutions consider the ACT and SAT scores as they are some of the most effective data points providing a basis for comparison of students from different parts of the country. In essence, these tests are actually perfect and do not accurately assess the intelligence and the skills a student carries along to school. The worst fact is that these are the tools some colleges use to evaluate students as an equalizing factor. For this reason, they will remain a significant component of school admissions and especially the big institutions. The opponents of the debate argue that the use of SAT and ACT scores are not being disbanded any soon, they require other testing scores in lieu such as IB or AP scores (Petersons).
Clearly, the proponents and opponents of the test scores being used to judge student efficiency have well-supported arguments. Tests scores are an option available for evaluating the very skills a student has and how efficient he or she might be but on the other hand, they are very subjective in that they do not outline the very skills which define the potential of an individual. For this reason, therefore, the controversies are balanced in the essence that though they might be used, the test scores at times are not so much applicable.
