Authentic Leadership
As a leadership style, authentic leadership emphasizes on the interpersonal skill of a person molding him or her to be honest and truthful in the management functions of organization. This leadership theory focuses on real and genuine leadership. The three major approaches of the authentic leadership theory includes: interpersonal, intrapersonal and development. The interpersonal approach posits that a leader is created through interaction with the followers. Indeed with time, a leader borrows some traits from the followers in the organization management. In the intrapersonal approach, the leader develops his or her skills from within his personality. Personal knowledge, self-concept and self regulation are examples of such skills. Personal knowledge is derived through learning. The development approach as the last, explains that the leader does not necessarily have the personal personalities but fostered over given time.
On the other hand, the hand the practical approach of the authentic leadership narrated by Robert Terry’s approach and Bill George approach. Robert Terry’s approach focus on the practice oriented-this whereby the leader follows the guidelines and procedure within the organization to grows the skills in management. These practices include the passion, consistency, behavior among others.
The two approaches are similar in that they focus mainly on the honesty and truthfulness of the authentic leader in the organization. However, the is a difference in the theoretical and practical approach in that, the practical approach deals mainly with the involvement of a leader in development of skills in management, while on the other hand theoretical approach one needs to have in build skills that help in the management.
Strategies that an authentic leader needs to have are; self-awareness this is where the leader needs to know his or her powers, confines, and value that thus improving the organization management. The second type of strategy is relational transparency that involves being honest and trustworthy in dealing with others within the organization. Authentic leader need not to hide any operational issues in management of the organization (Avolio, Bruce J, 2007).
