Beattie's Model and Nutrition Programs
A food program focusing on mothers, infants, and toddlers, commonly referred to as "WIC," is one recent health promotion initiative. It's a federal program run by the US Department of Agriculture that focuses on providing health aid to low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women who can't afford nutritious meals or health care (Thompson, 2014). The program also includes newborn infants and children under the age of five.

To be eligible for this program, a candidate's eligibility must be determined through the recommendation of a health expert who must state that the candidate is at risk of malnutrition. Candidates must also meet applicable state residency requirements and have an income that is below 185% of the government poverty provisions (Thompson, 2014). A woman can, however, be automatically eligible for the program if she or members of her family already participate in other health assistance programs.
The WIC Program has proved to be effective over the past years since it was established. Thus, better birth outcomes among women have been observed, and health care costs have significantly decreased. According to the Government Accountability Office analysis, the program saved $ 2.89 in the first year for every dollar spent on pregnant women after giving birth and a further $3.50 over the next eighteen years (Odoms et al., 2014). Besides, diet analysis of children within the program indicated a decline in anemia cases due to increased intake of Iron. These children also exhibited more intake of vitamins and carbohydrates with minimal added sugars and fats as compared to children that are not in the program.
The WIC Program is a government-run initiative, and in Beattie’s model, it falls under the top-down approach incorporating legislative action and health persuasion method. Legislative action is adopted in enforcing laws that dictate eligibility and provisions for funding, while the health persuasion approach is adopted in the education of pregnant and breastfeeding women. Moreover, individual parents are offered advice on immunizations and the relevant diet. This method is necessary for this program since it is federally assisted working with specific individual members of the society.
