Biomimicry Research
Biomimicry is a developing and emerging discipline involving eager observation of million genius organisms within the ecosystem and decoding brilliant design advice from them. These biologically inspired designs are essential in correctly solving most of our daily involvements. In short, it refers to consulting Nature, which has been round for years, yet portraying a lot of untapped skills and potentials for human use to decorate their lives.
The Rationale
This is because organisms within the ecosystem aside from humans seem to stay gracefully and for many years. Benyus believes that those ancient creatures appear to have a lot that can be borrowed to enhance human living prerequisites by the virtue that they have been round for long and utilized thoseskills successfully.
Q 1. How can nature inspire an innovation?
Organism used: Kingfishers
Solution: J.R West, a company that makes bullet trains, initially had a problem with the excess noise generated by the train. The company’s engineer studied how kingfishers travel from air to a medium of water without making any splash. After experimenting for decades, they redesigned the shape of the train to resemble the posture of the Kingfisher while diving into the water; the innovation made the train go 10% faster on 15% less electricity (Benyus).
Q 2. How does nature repel bacteria?
Organism used: Galapagos shark
Solution: This organism is not prone to attacks by bacteria because of the architectural pattern on its skin denticels that cannot allow bacteria to stay on it. According to Benyus, a company known as Sharklet Technologies has begun to use the shark’s architectural design in hospital equipment to prevent bacteria in hospital. The model has proved to be more effective than other preventive measures such as anti-bacterial cleaning.
Q 3. How does nature gather suns energy?
Benyus uses an example of aquaporin molecules embedded within Red blood cells of every organism that has fluid blood. This molecule is efficient and specialized in exporting water molecules through osmosis as well as separating solutes from the fluid.
Solution: A company by the name Aquaporin is now utilizing such knowledge to manufacture desalination membrane by mimicking technique of the aquaporin molecules.
Two paragraph descriptions of ask nature.
A Biological Strategy: The characteristic of nature that helps organisms to thrive and adapt to various atmospheric conditions. Different organisms employ specific strategies that help them to survive in their environs. For instance, the hair of Saharan silver ants minimizes heat absorption by sufficiently reflecting sunlight and dissipating the excess desert heat, hence keeping it cool irrespective of the harsh condition in the desert.
The biological strategy utilized by the Saharan silver ants can be mimicked when designing buildings and structures for the desert environment. The surface of these edifices can be made to resemble the texture and color of the hair of Saharan silver ants. By borrowing this strategy from nature, architects can come up with sustainable house designs for the desert without much hustle. Also, according to Koch and Barthlott (2009), certain plants also have types have of leaves that enable them to survive in various ambiances; these designs and plant mechanism can also be borrowed when developing surfaces for structures.
