Breastfeeding
I. Breastfeeding in Public
I would like to point out that breast-feeding mothers in our country tend to have a tough time publicly breast-feeding. Some mothers are slandered at the opportunity to breastfeed in public places and even mocked at it. In certain cases, the parents are for indecency barred from hotels and public parks. While most states agree that these mothers have the right, most moms do not have a law to protect them from abuse. It is hence not surprising to note that the moms sometimes have to take the insults and jeers from the people and yet have zero power to file a lawsuit since they would not have backing facts. Indeed, this situation leaves most moms helpless with some of them resulting to alternative infant feeding to satisfy their children.
II. Enhancing Sanitation in the Community
I appreciate the talk you presented in our school, on enhancing sanitation in our community. I have managed to educate my community members on ways to ensure that they live in a clean environment and suffer fewer infections courtesy of the lessons I received that day. I have remarkably seen fewer cases of sickness especially among the children who continue to practice good sanitation habits. I wish to appreciate you for this talk because I believe it has helped to save thousands of children since people know how to take better care of their families. I, therefore, believe that you have the capacity to implement policies that will encourage mothers to breastfeed in public and reduce public interference with the mothers.
III. Risks and Challenges of Pumping Milk
Due to the harassment, women are forced to pump their milk and store it in some storage bottles since it is safer that way and they would look decent while feeding their children. I would, however, wish to acknowledge the fact that various risk factors accompany a child that takes complementary foods before their time. Infants below six months have a poorly developed digestive system, and the child may have difficulty digesting the food that they consume. Besides, the mother’s milk is always at the right temperature, and when the milk is in a bottle, the mother has to seek for avenues to warm the milk which is time-consuming and expensive.
IV. The Importance of Public Breastfeeding
If mothers had the full freedom and public consent of breastfeeding in public, then they would not have to worry about hygiene measures and the health risks associated with taking other foods since they would happily and instantly feed their hungry child. It is worth noting that denying a mother the chance to breastfeed their child in public is akin to denying that child food. Well breastfed children have better immunity which makes them fight so many diseases even as they grow up meaning that the mothers suffer fewer costs regarding hospital bills. Long term breastfeeding has also been associated with high IQ levels in the children. Besides having healthy children, breastfeeding enhances the bond between the mother and the child.
V. Enforcing Breastfeeding Rights
I would, therefore, urge you to partner with your fellow legislative members to enforce the breastfeeding rights in our state. It is indeed sad that mothers are denied access to some public places because they would turn off other customers when they choose to nurse their children. I feel that the public should appreciate and embrace the mothers while encouraging them to breastfeed their children instead of sneering at them. The public breastfeeding law should hence be enforced, and action should be taken against the people to ridicule the breastfeeding mothers or utter harsh words to them. A breastfeeding law that has no enforcement provision does little to benefit these women.
