Bullying Among High School Students: A Critique
Bullying is described as the use of intimidation and violence towards another individual. Bullying among teens in high schools is on the rise, with negative physical and psychological implications for both victims and perpetrators. The aim of (TÜRKMEN, 2013)'s research article is to evaluate the prevalence of bullying behaviour among high school adolescents in Turkey, as well as the aggressors and victims, and the different types of bullying. In order to prevent bullying in schools, the researchers proposed that a multidisciplinary approach involving teenagers, parents, and security agencies will be needed. To assess the levels of bullying, the researchers used a cross-sectional study of students in classes one and two. The research design formed a sectional descriptive study, and a total of 6127 students participated. Based on the statistical analysis conducted using SPSS analysis, the results indicated that a majority of up to 96.7% were involved in bullying behaviors (TÜRKMEN, 2013). Also, the probability of male students engaging in bullying behavior was higher compared to that of female students.
From the study, the findings supported the hypothesis of the research that high school bullying can only be approached based on multiple disciplinary interventions. The study also indicated that boys were more likely to be aggressors and the girls to fall victim. The approach of using various interventions would be sufficient to counter unreported cases in the school setting.
However, the research methodology which involved cross-sectional survey using questionnaires may be limited. The students surveyed may not have been sincere in answering the inquiries. Also, the participation of other interventions was not actively considered, i.e., the participation of parents.
In general, multiple interventions are required to approach the ever-increasing bullying practice in high schools. The approach should take into consideration the affected children, their parents, and other institutions such as media, government, and non-governmental organizations in the bid to prevent bullying in high school settings.
