Burj Khalifa Tower
Burj Khalifa in Arabic means Khalifa tower. This magnificent sky scrapper is located in Dubai, UAE and sits on a 500-acre piece of land. It is the tallest shape ever built in the world standing at the height of 829.8 m which is equal to 2722 ft. It cost over $20 billion to put up. It was inaugurated in 2010 as a business building. Furthermore, it is a 162-storey building and home to numerous residential homes hotels specially the Armani hotel, retail outlet office space. The owner of this splendor is Emaar Properties (Abdelrazaq 2993). Construction Its construction began in 2004 and was completed five years later. The architects and structural engineers had been Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. The Architecture in the record is Hyder Consulting while three companies, Arabtec, Samsung, and Besix are listed as contractors. Construction process recruited twelve thousand people of different nationalities. The tower was designed to resist and minimize the vile effects of winds (Abdelrazaq 2993).
The tower is essentially a buttressed core reinforced with concrete (Self Compacting Concrete) allowing dramatic height accommodation using advanced construction techniques and conventional materials (Baker and Pawlikowski 392). It is founded on a 3.7 m concrete raft with a three-winged building where at the floor a hexagonal core holds and connects the wings. The core has the elevator and technical compartments while the commercial and residential spaces are in the wings. The hexagonal core confers torsional resistance to the building while the wings increase moments of inertia and offer shear resistance. Hammerhead walls run through each wing from the core. At the mechanical floors, outrigger walls join the perimeter columns with all the walls and columns to offer stability (Abdelrazaq 2996-3004).
Conclusion
The design of the Bhurj Khalifa, a product of a multifactorial team, provides inspiration for the construction of more tall buildings that defy gravity and harsh elements of weather such as the wind.
