Can we feed the world and solve the world food crisis?
1. The article dissimilar in the manner it looks into the problem elaborately and proffers solutions that could help minimize the determined food and environmental problems.
2. Finding a solution to the menace of access to food and poverty is welcomed but the measures put in place should be one that is sustainable.
3. Agriculture is an environmental problem since it involves deforestation, farming on acres of lands, and planting crops on sensitive landscapes and the surrounding watersheds (Foley 62).
4. The three great problems are greenhouse emissions, biodiversity losses, water use and pollution (Foley 62).
5. The problem is more complex than expanding the area under faring because doing so would create another problem, which is an increase in the agriculture footprint.
6. The food people grow, is consumed or stored, but a substantial amount goes to waste.
7. The author suggests five solutions to the food problem and environmental issues. First, there is the need to cease expanding agriculture’s footprint. Second, there is the need to improve the yields of current farmlands to avoid expanding agriculture’s footprints. Third, farmers should emphasize the efficient use of the available resources, where they produce more crops per unit of water, energy, and fertilizer. Fourth, people should be encouraged to diversify their diet and reduce the intake of meat. Lastly, there should be minimal wastage of food.
8. The five solutions are reasonable and achievable. However, there should be a continuing education of the public that informs people of the need to shift farming techniques, diet, and store food in better ways, among others. The issue of funding might also be complicated because some of the solutions, such as halting agriculture’s footprint, and increasing efficiency, require technology.
