civil war
Following the Civil War, several changes occurred in the country that had an impact on everyday life. The nation was scarred by numerous conflicts. Conflict and anarchy spread widely as a result, which was bad for the general public. As a result of the Congress passing numerous legislation during the post-Civil War era, the political environment also witnessed significant changes. This essay focuses on Native Americans' post-Civil War experiences in America. In particular, the study describes the effects of the disputes on the lives and welfare of Native Americans as well as the numerous legal measures that were implemented to protect their interests. The lawlessness that characterized parts of the country after the war predisposed the Native Americans to violence leading to widespread atrocities. In most cases, they were in confrontation against the army and militia that propagated organized violence sponsored by the state. In the confrontation with the opponents, the Native Americans were killed. In particular, many of them were hanged, murdered while others were forced into exile. Such is indicative of the fact that the Native Americans continued to suffer after the end of the Civil War, which from a personal viewpoint, was undesirable considering that the civil war was the perceived to be the lowest point as far as internal conflicts were concerned. One of the areas where the Indians suffered most was the Owens Valley where it is almost impossible to distinguish between the wars of resistance and hunting endeavors by the Native Americans. However, in some instances, the killing of the Native Americans was retaliatory acts of the whites for the killing of their cattle. The government of the day did not help either. Due to the social conflict in the country, the authorities as indicated in the Wovoka message arrested the Indian leaders. Based on a personal viewpoint, this move by the government of the day was not acceptable in the post-civil war America.
The government of the day did not help either in the easing of the suffering if the Native Americans. In fact, plans were put in place to suppress the Indians after the death of Sioux Indians around 1890. When the state officers killed Sitting Bull, many other members of the Native Indians were killed as well. The state of affairs did not want pint to a healthy nations. Additionally, the Native Americans were also subjected to ethnic profiling. There were plans to remove them from their abode in Mexico as affirmed by a letter to President Cleveland in 1886. The rationale for this was the blame on the Native Americans as being responsible for multiple raids in the region. At the end of the letter, Edmund tells the president that the only way of ascertaining stability in that part of the world was through driving out the Indians. In a reactionary move, the political class, the Congress moved to control the situation. Such led to the enactment of the Dawes Act in 1887. The law was meant to protect the Indians and to eliminate the tribal violence perpetrated. The initiation of the Bill commenced at the city of Washington on December 6, 1886. The Senate and the House of Representatives played the enactment role. I agree with the move by the political class to enact the Dawes Act in ta bid to protect the atrocities inflicted on the Native Americans.
Historically, the suffering of the Native Americans persisted after the American Civil War. Towards the end of the 19th century, a social conflict that was apparent in the country predisposed Native Americans to violence netted by the state actors as well as the whites. However, the solution to the problems of the Native Americans ended through the Dawes Act of 1887. Through the act, laws were put in place that identified and protected Native Americans.
