Cognitive Dissonance as an Attitude Problem
Jada needs to address cognitive dissonance as an attitude problem on her floor in the hospital. The nurses who she manages have developed bad feelings towards her emphasis on the need to ensure safety in the hospital which profoundly influences their behavior. The nurses feel that Jada is teaching them how to do a job that they have done for many years which leads to rebellion and giving her names. Cognitive dissonance suggests that their social world influences the attitudes of individuals and the social world is affected by their opinions (Borkowski, 2011). Thus, the social world among the nurses makes them feel that Jada is only becoming bossy because she has been made the manager. As such, they develop negative attitudes towards the need to improve safety in the hospital.
Leadership Style
Jada should use the democratic style of leadership to get her staff on board with the safety measures she recommends them to adopt. In this style of leadership, Jada will encourage open communication with her staff (Borkowski, 2011). Jada will explain to the staff the importance of taking safety measures when disposing of needles and wastes and the need to handle all electrical cords in the right way. Moreover, Jada should ensure that her staff understands the importance of cleaning spilled liquids promptly. The open communication will also provide a channel for Jada to get opinions from her staff.
Rationale
Democratic leadership style is appropriate for Jada because it encourages participation in decision making (Borkowski, 2011). As such, the staff will stop viewing her as bossy or think that she is teaching them how to do a job they have done for many years. The team will become open to adopting the safety measures when they feel they are part of the recommendations. Moreover, the democratic leadership style focuses on the need to build relationships with staff. Thus, Jada will get the staff to become open to the recommendations on the need for safety which will reduce the negative opinions.
