A personal level of anxiety, fear, and nervousness
A personal level of anxiety, fear, and nervousness experienced due to an actual or anticipated communication with other persons is known as communication apprehension. Initially when I was asked to give a formal presentation in front of professionals, I had a communication apprehension. It later became clear to me after conducting a research that my downfalls are at periods when I am out of context and I barely make my point because I rarely communicate without hurting my listeners. Sometimes, I open my mouth because I feel I am bolder without thinking. If I can think before acting, then I hold no such misconception. Being this way hurt my listeners but I do not intend to hurt anyone. Also, the large number of people present created some fear in me and I could not offer my points as required. More often than not, I do not like people looking at me because they make me uncomfortable in one way or the other.
Overcoming communication apprehension
I must maintain a softer tone of communicating than usual and avoid being so bold to overcome all these. I should learn how to take a situation and further break it down into listening and hearing scenarios. I should take the position and treat any communication forum with a lot of respect at individual and professional levels. According to Bevan and Sole (2014), the use of a respectful language, being polite and encouraging others demonstrates respect. Nonetheless, Sole (2014) emphasizes that some of the causes of the communication apprehensions are due to innate aspects of the unique voices and body that is difficult to change. Communication plays a role in professionalism. There is a need for one to be precise and avoid rambling to enhance professionalism. There is need to think first before talking as this will guarantee professionalism (Bevan and Sole, 2014). Moreover, spell and grammar check whatever is to be communicated to another party. In conclusion, anxiety, fear, and being nervous is real and sometimes is anticipated but can be avoided.
