Cumul 1
Cumul 1 and Man Pointing Sculptures
Cumul 1 is white marble on timber base sculpture made in 1969 by Louise Bourgeois. The bulbous mounds of white spherical and ovoid conflate forms refers to the cumulus clouds that show up as rounded with a three-dimensional appearance. The Man Pointing sculpture, on the other hand, is a product of Alberto Giacometti made from bronze in 1947 featuring a frail upright masculine discern in a gesticulating and pointing stand. These two pieces represent human characteristics and characterize the cumulative life and singular existence of a person. The Cumul 1 forms communicate the aesthetic need for a sexually differentiated man or woman to live among others and combat to retain identity as the bulbous heads rip out of the fabric in the sculpture while the frail pointing man communicates the pressure and thinness of what to go by when one stands alone but shows the ability the man gains in so doing and therefore negotiating the need for autonomy and empowerment from the cumulative.
Kehinde Wiley and Pop Culture
Kehinde Wiley has a naturalistic approach to art that can be attributed to the marginalized nature of the art works he presents featuring pop culture black persons that portray an ethnic idealization identifiable in contemporary African American artists. Working from the margins of mainstream culture has, however, made it possible for Wiley to collate contemporary pop culture with urban landscape to present art that has strong historical reference to a present time when pop culture is still a menace. The Big Daddy Kane oil on canvas from 2005 invokes the allure of the personality and celebrity status in the individual embodied in the anonymous subject of pop culture. From a marginalized background, Wiley is able to explore pop culture beyond entertainment and as a cultural hindrance to the importance and role in culture.
