Dangers of Fracking Chemicals
Are you familiar with any information on this site, what are they? I am familiar with Fracking also known as Hydraulic Fracturing which is a technique used in the extraction of oil and gas from shale rock. During this process, oil and gas is forced to flow out of the head of the well by drilling into the site and then directing high-pressure mixture into the rock. This has resulted to a significant change in the production of gas in the United States by increasing production thereby causing a reduction in the overall cost of production. Also, I am familiar with the environmental debate especially concerning the transportation of water to the site and potential earth tremors from the fractured rocks.
What new ideas extended your thinking?
However, it has never crossed my mind that the chemicals used could be harmful. Often, the process is described as pumping a mixture of sand, water, and chemicals into the rock. The author cites some studies that suggest a correlation between birth defects and proximity to the wells. The idea that the chemicals can be harmful to the environment and the people calls for immediate action. Could the chemicals used be substituted with environmentally friendly ones? Could the wells be treated after exploration?
What challenges or puzzle have come up in your mind? Is there any information that you doubt or intrigues you that you want to learn more about? Explain
The author boldly claims that the Environmental Protection Agency is aware of the fact that the chemicals used in fracking process pose health hazards. In spite of this, EPA allows the chemicals to be used without further testing. I can hardly believe that a government body tasked with the role of protecting the environment will compromise its mandate and allow harmful chemicals to be used. I would love to know the details of the chemicals used the kind of testing done and the results. I would also like to gain insights into the research methodologies and limitations of the studies that suggested potential health impacts (Stolber).
