death
Yes! The talk has changed my perspective on death. Many people have a strong fear of death, thanatophobia, as Sigmund Freud hypothesized that people have thanatophobia, which is not necessarily a fear of death because no one believes in his own death, no one fears death, but those who do are simply dealing with an unresolved childhood conflict that they can't come to terms with or don't want to express feelings to. He claims that because no one has ever died, we cannot fear death; however, humans always fear something else, such as desertion, constration, unresolved childhood turmoil, or a sense of guilt. (S.Freud. An outline of psychoanalysis. 1940).
This statement by Freud are true according to Mr. Randy he is just about to die he has a couple of months to live yet he is not so bothered he is not morose or pitiful . He says that he doesn’t choose to be an object of pity he is enthusiastic and cheerful he lives peaceful. It is not even that he is at peace with his death ,he says clearly that he don’t like it he has three kid and he is taking his medication but he knows well that he will finally die, but is he so confident and composed?
To start with Sigmund Freud says that people who fears death are only dealing with some unresolved childhood conflict which they can’t come to terms with. Mr. Randy takes us back to his childhood days through their family album he looks at the photos and can’t find even one where he wasn’t smiling ,meaning he had a great childhood , he is giving a talk on life and how to live life this can translate that a good life can relieve you from death anxiety .
Mr. Randy takes us through his childhood dreams these are always the issues that a times remain unresolved in one’s mind quite a long time ,for him he list his dreams those he managed to achieve and those he never achieved ,the important thing here is that Mr. Randy knows what he gained from his dreams he never achieved; Experience. He wanted to be in the National Football Team but he never managed but he has come to terms with this and has appreciated himself where he managed to reach ,his dream of being a Disney Imagineering thrilled him that even after getting rejection letters he pushed and pushed till he finally manage to meet his dream ,in addition to those he also had a dream of zero gravity he managed to achieve this one more easily without much struggle . Mr. Randy is a determined man with the zeal to get what he wants, he also shares with us the reason of brick walls; to show how badly you want it.
Talking of abandonment Mr. Randy have a lovely family form his childhood his family was very supportive, he complains of hard PhD papers he always has his mother to comfort him and put him on check ,”we know how you feel but just remember when your farther was your age he was fighting the Germans in world war ii ,he grew up well without much struggle .His family allowed him to paint on the wall of his room to express himself. In the whole talk Mr. Randy talks of a house they have just bought with his family despite him having just a couple of months to live his current family aren’t abandoning him either, from Sigmund Freud’s article this is a among the reason why people develop thanatophobia contrary to Mr. Randy he is so confident and he has no death anxiety.
As hypothesized by Sigmund Freud that people with thanatophobia actually don’t fear death but some unresolved conflict if we look at Mr. Randy’s life he had a relatively appreciating life he managed to achieve his childhood dreams, those he couldn’t achieve he appreciated himself where he reached .Mr. Randy also knew how to live and relate with the people around him. He teaches how to work well with others: tell the truth; learn how to say sorry appropriately, show gratitude; to people who helped you achieved your goal, don’t whine and complain. All these are to help you live peacefully with yourself and reduce tension in your mind that’s why Mr. Randy is composed even though he is facing the fangs of death.
Thanatophobia can also be caused either death of a close relative or loved one , death anxiety according to how you are brought up or excessive contrasting news about origin of man religiously. Mr. Randy has learned to deal with these very well he also lost a father and he triumphed over it. At the end he gives why gave the talk, the talk was about living your life if you do it right the dreams will come to you .
