Economic Constraints Imposed on the US by the Immigrants
As Borjas and others say, “immigration is changing the future and character of America, more so the economy, like a great glacier cutting valleys, depositing soil, and feeding rivers.” Immigrants have become a large pimple on the American bark. Economists have increasingly emerged as a leading voice in contemporary immigration policy debates. According to economic theory, refugees come to the United States in the same manner that computer systems, Toyotas, and Eurodollars do; with the anticipation of a rise in economic profit. There has not been a concise agreement on the economists in the US on which side of the immigration argument to rely on. Advocate for an open border while others are strictly supporting the US President Donald Trump on closing the borders for the immigrants.
In this article, I argue as an anti-expansionists opposed to open borders for the immigrants to enter the US. Since the immigrants started flocking into our country and crossing our border illegally, there has been nothing less that economic constraints as the government try to cater for the expenses of the other population. The immigrants faster intruded into our nation to dominate essential parts of the local economy. Immigrant are known for the provision of cheap labour, and that makes them the target of some companies which do not want to pay the wage for a regular American citizen. As an American youth, an economic graduate, I have sufficient educational credentials which can earn me a good job, and just like many other American youths in the country, our jobs have been taken up by the millions of immigrants stuck in our nation. It is arguably correct to say that those who opposite the deportation of the immigrants is most definitely not in the jargon of joblessness that we as youth are currently suffering from.
The problematic of illegal immigration into the US needs to be solved from a higher level. First of all, the two key issues that prompt these outsiders to sneak into our country is because they have technological know-how, and secondly they are assured that they can manipulate the job industry by accepting petite pay. As Bansak and other authors suggest, the problem of immigration that the US is facing could only be solved by addressing the motivators of the immigration. First and foremost, the young people in the country need all the support from the government on technical courses. The point is that there is a gap in the American population for professional jobs, as stated by Smith, James P. Once the youth take up the courses and qualify for the job, then there will be no need for immigrants with such skill in the country.
Looking at the economic models of immigration regarding public finance and labor market, the immigrants have had a hand in the negative trends that we have been experiencing. As a matter of fact, immigration adds more workers in the labor pool.
According to Borjas, George J, and Richard Freeman, statistics shows that since 1970, the share of the foreign workers in the labor market has tripled from 5-15% up to date. With this high rate of job market going to foreign-born workers, then it is crystal clear that immigrants have had a hand in youth joblessness in the country. Additional, the rate is bound to increase on a daily basis as more immigrants are allowed into the country. Allowing more of these group into the country by the influential people in the government will be worsening the monster on economic upheaves we already have, and that is why I support the US present on deportation of the immigrants.
Another effective strategy to suction the motivations of immigration would be to put strict measures for all labor markets. There are already policies which have been established on the minimum wage that an American worker should be paid. However, with the coming of the immigrants, these policies have been bent, and now petite salaries are awarded to them. The government should ensure that all workers whether immigrant or not are paid the regular wage as per the regulations. Once the mandatory wage standards regulations have been effected, employers will not favor the immigrants over the US citizens. With the offsetting of low salaries, more Americans will be for a person to apply for jobs as the pay will be fair and sufficient enough to cater for their expenses and their daily needs.
“Analysing the opposing side of the people who support immigration into the country”, says Oliver Stuenkel, “some of them argue that we as Americans have not been banned from immigrating to any country all over the world.” Additionally, others argue that the cheap and sufficient labor, both manual and technical has helped improve our economy to greater lengths. The human right activists, on the other hand, argue that the immigrants face political social and economic persecutions in their country. All their arguments are correct, but they turn a blind eye to the fact that we also have our demons in the closet that we have to face on a daily basis, yet Americans have stuck in our country trying to find solutions to the problems we face on a daily basis. Additionally, were it not for the cheap labor they offer making them the priority in local market job pools, those job spaces would be filled by American youth who are struggling with joblessness.
The efforts put by President Trump to stem out illegal immigration into the US have been fruitful. In his written testimony which was submitted to the Senate panel, John Kelly gave data showing that 12,500 fewer people have been arrested trying to cross the border into the US in April 2017. The statistics were compared to those of February the same year where 43,000 immigrants were detained at the border. “the statistics have been the lowest monthly data in the last 17 years,” Kelly admits, “and the decrease was no by any chance an accident”. All the president has been a victim of criticism from local to international levels, Americans will only start to appreciate him when they realize that the economy of the nation, as well as joblessness amongst the youth, has reduced to plausible levels. Since the number of illegal immigrants into the country reduced, the new jobs available will be taken up by rightful American youths who have nowhere else to seek or job apart from their country, unlike the immigrants who still have the opportunity of getting jobs back in their nations. One thing should be crystal clear to the illegal immigrants; the notion that they have that life in the US comes on a silver platter is an illusion, and that opportunities lie in their country and it’s just a matter of being aggressive and exploiting them.
