Educating Young Children on Prek Colors
In the pre-school years, young children usually attend school to get educated on colors. The ability to identify colors by young children is a great landmark in the development of their brains. This ability to identify colors is also a part of the screening process to admit the children into schools (Salas, 2011). It is also a very important part of development if the child can identify the colors accurately by their names. The cognitive link between words and visuals is enhanced by early identification of colors. It is therefore important to teach colors to children as these enhances their learning (Salas, 2011).
Teaching colors to children is a very important and delicate undertaking and is facilitated in many ways since children are naturally attracted to all bright colors that surround them. This explains the reason why most toys are brightly colored since in such wy they can easily attract their attention. Children begin to notice vivid colors during their early stages of development since they are babies or toddlers (Salas,2011). Therefore, teaching colors to children during their preschool years is important as they have a natural affinity of understanding the world around them. The fact that they are surrounded by a brightly colored environment presents teachers with the opportunity of discussing colors and bringing a positive impact on their knowledge. One most common technique employed by teachers is matching colors with objects as they engage children’s attention and enhance their memory (Terrill & Zaun, 2001).
In my opinion, teaching colors is important to children as colors are part of everyday living. For this reason, to me they give opportunities to teach children about life generally. Personally, the best method of teaching children colors is picking one particular color every week and focusing on that color while engaging other objects, activities including the type of food that they eat. This technique will enable an educator to bring the beauty of color to children while increasing their knowledge of the world around them.
