Effective communication
Taking into consideration five basic principle of communication, effective communication is a vital necessity of any organization. A person whether he speaks or not has relayed a message as communication is an involuntary action.
Also, when a message is passed it cannot be taken back; this is because communication is irreversible.
- Communication has different complexities which forms it different aspects. Such includes: the language used, environment, the medium as well as interpretation.
- Communication being a continuous process makes it near impossible to repeat the same message without altering the original message.
- Based on this context, all communication happens for a reason.
However, there are barriers to effective communication and this may be as a result of the receiver perceiving the message in a manner in which the sender did not intend.
- Inattentiveness, lack of interest, interruptions, irrelevance of the topic to the receiver and a language difference makes it difficult for effective communication.
- Clarification, active and attentive listening are ways to overcome these barriers.
Self-attributes as to how one feels, think or want others to see and think about them are learned and maintained through interactive communication.
- Negative statements and frequent ridicule affects an individuals’ view of themselves since the social self is the fragment that interacts with others.
Culture and gender both have an impact on communication, masculine forms being associated with men’s communication whereas feminine forms with women.
- Men use communication as a means to achieving desires while women tend to use it for creating connections
- Men largely talk about facts, women talk more about people, emotions, and relationships.
- Culture dictates choice and use of words and the use of body language.
Men talk less while women talk more often seeking clarification and therefore perceived to be more interactive.
In conclusion, identifying and effecting these principles of communication, while taking into consideration the barriers, cultural and gender differences will lead to better interpersonal communication.
