Effective Interpersonal Communication
Interpersonal communication is among the highest life skills that individuals suppose to have to attain the goal of the team. The degree of communication ascertains if the team performance will be high or low. That is, it is the factor on if the team will perform effectively and reach its goals.
The guidelines of and impediments to effective interpersonal communications.
- Effective listening: One should listen carefully as he/she avoids early criticisms, judgments, approval or making early comparisons.
- Being respectful: Avoiding directing anger is important for an effective interpersonal communication. With respect, one cannot shame others in communication.
- Asking questions: Question asking helps in knowing if the message is well understood or not.
- Using silence: It is also important to involve silence especially to give time for another person to digest the information and creating time too to provide more information (Vandemark & Leth, 2011).
Barriers to effective interpersonal communications.
- Language barrier: This is evident when members do not share a common language or when another person is visually impaired (Floyd, 2017). However, this can be solved by having interpreters or the challenge being dealt with before the meeting.
- Environmental barriers: This could be noise or lack of privacy. The solution to this is by rescheduling the venue.
The role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem
Self-concept is the image that a person has on him/herself and his status, strengths or weaknesses. On the other hand, self-image is how one perceives himself and the essence of seeing the physical state of oneself. Self-esteem refers to the confidence that one has to himself such that he didn't shy off while communicating. Communication plays a key role in maintaining one’s self-esteem, self-image and self-concept because in the course of communication an individual becomes bold, gains courage and sees him/herself more important as before. Psychology and communication have a relationship at a point we derive the phrase psychology of communication. Here, there is a receiver and a sender of the information ( Emmert, Emmert& Brooks, 2014). The sender encodes the message, and the receiver on the other hand listens and decodes the message.
The impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications
Brings misunderstanding: In some cultures, it is believed that men are above female in doing everything to the point that a female cannot instruct a male counterpart. Example, a female leader of a team in such cultures may be giving instructions in doing things, but misunderstanding comes in because of gender biases (Braithwaite, 2015).
In such cases, the female will be playing her role as a leader but the male sees it as lack of respect thus this becomes a barrier to interpersonal communication.
To maintain a good interpersonal communication, respect must prevail regardless of gender.
Conclusion
Interpersonal communication is important for the team to reach its goals and this can only be achieved when its principles are observed. It is also key to solve the barriers to interpersonal communication because it does not only play a role in reaching out the goals of the team but also raises ones' self-esteem, self-image, and self-concept.
