Elector Turnout
In the United States, low voter turnout has been associated with varied reasons as established by various electoral projects and activists. Notably, the low voter turnout is recorded to be as a result of the strict legislative laws that have been imposed on the voters. As a matter of fact, various states have been reported to impose strict laws on voter registration, limited early voting periods, and photo ID mandates (Regan). Furthermore, the voter turnout is recorded to be lower in regions where there is less stiff competition between the Democrats and the Republicans. For example, the areas dominated by one party, like Hawaii and New York which are solid Democrats, will likely have lower voter turnout compared to regions where both parties have a nearly same hold (Regan).
In many states worldwide, low voter turnout has an adverse impact on the country’s political arena. For instance, the regions which have the least voter turnout in the elections end up least represented because of the inability to influence the policies being put in place (Subramanian). Consequently, the democracy in the given country, say the United States, will be affected contributing to more citizens abstaining from voting as a whole.
For the country to realize increased voter turnout, it is important to institute compulsory voting in every state. For instance, compulsory voting has been reported to have contributed to an increased voter turnout in Australia from 67% to 91% because of the people avoid being fined A$20 for failing to vote (Subramanian). Moreover, the electoral legislation should be made less strict so that the voters can be allowed to vote with their ID or any form of identification rather than insisting on many identification strategies.
