Essay About Myopia
Myopia is a condition in which the eyeball is longer than normal. This problem affects approximately 20-30% of the population, however it is effectively treated by the use of eyeglasses, surgery, or contact lenses. As it is a hereditary related disorder (LIM), the major mechanism underlying this ailment is genetic systems and setups. Myopia begins during childhood and can either plateau or worsen as one gets older.A patient suffering from this condition suffers from persistent headaches and eyestrain, fatigue when driving and squinting and these are some of the things one can observe in order to determine the possibility of the condition in a patient. Patients suffering from myopia are known to be shortsighted as they have difficulty seeing things that are far off.
Since the condition is hereditary in nature, phylogenic analysis can be performed on the number members who have suffered from the condition in a given family (MORGAN). With this one can easily determine the probability of having a myopic patient in that particular family.
The hypothesis that can be derived in this case is whether a child who is born in a family in which there is a history of shortsightedness will become myopic and will have to wear glasses throughout his or her life. The children born would be then taken through multiple tests at various stages of their lives in order to prove this hypothesis. Eventually, after these series of tests the researcher will be able to tell the probability of having a child who is myopic in the family under investigation and hence conclude on whether the children will need to wear glasses throughout their lives or not.
