Ethics and administrative agencies
The office is a forum where many partnerships begin and, according to a survey by Winstead & Streets, 40% of individuals between the ages of thirty-five and fifty meet with their partners at work (2010). Despite the rigid code of conduct that considers working arrangements to be aberrational and dishonest, it is clear that the majority of workers, despite working in separate workplaces, find themselves in this bait. The task in such cases is to set a distinction between personal matters and work. Mr. Brian Day and Mr. Brown are victims of an employment affair and there is a conflict of interest in the way that the two firms are interlinked. In this situation, Day needs approval for a new device, and coincidentally, the FCC working towards his approval is Brown, whom they already have an affair. Therefore, as the head of the human resource at Future Electronics, I would advise him to proceed with his decision of having another director at FCC to process his approval to avoid contravening the company’s ethical policies.
Mr. Day is at no risk of legal misconduct since relationship matters are considered ethically-based in the eyes of the law. However, being on the verge of ethical misconduct, Day has a conflict of interest in this matter and having Brown to process his approval may result in corrupted means of service delivery. This is because, the approval, as seen in the situation, takes at least a year to process. However, allowing Brown to process the approval for Mr. Day will promote unethical acts such as fastening the process through engaging in favors, which is based on their affair. Therefore, Brown may end up favoring Day’s approval, which causes her to be at the risk of engaging in work misconduct (Winstead & Streets 2010). When this matter is later reviewed, Day and Brown may be found guilty of engaging in unethical actions and breaching the organizations’ policies. Furthermore, in case their relationship ends, both companies may end up in an ugly entanglement caused by the two parties, which may taint the brands of both companies.
The other conflict of interest in this scenario is the fact that Future Electronics’ main competitor is about to launch a similar device and the one who manages to launch first may make high sales. Therefore, as the HRM, I may advise Day to find another director to process his approval, but allow Brown to follow up the process. This will eliminate the conflict of interest and also fasten the process, thus remain at an upper hand both ethically, and businesswise. Secondly, based on the company’s policies, Day should disclose the kind of relationship they have to his supervisor, who has the control over his employment. This action will ensure honesty, and in case of any mayhem, he will be safe.
