Feminism, anthropology and Gendering of Religious Studies
An extract from the book, Feminists Anthropology and Gendering of Religious Studies gives an analysis of the relationship between feminism critics and history of religion. Feminists have tried to change all along various disciplines that raise the position of a woman in the society. Using the culture of the third world countries and current western country trends, anthropology has mock feminism. Religion on the other hand indirectly mocks feminism by using the “from Above” theory. This is because everything that happens on earth is seen to be from a supernatural being, above or God. In this scenario, the critics of feminism believe that a woman's position in the society is an order form above and it should stay as it is (Rosenfelt & Newton 28).
The history of religion and feminism critics has continued to oppress women by representing itself as not socially gendered. It has used the Sui generis (our kind) slogan to disadvantage women by trying to imply that people of the same kind are expected to behave in a certain way. The position of man and woman in the society basing on religion is pre-set. The position of a woman in a religion setting has been disadvantaged. Men are in all the cases seen as the head and women are the necks in a Christian setting (Shaw 68).
There have been deliberate efforts to belittle programs that are feminine in institutions of learning and religious institutions. Institutional embattlement and politics ensure that any efforts to create programs such gender studies are objected and belittled completely (Shaw 71). Critics argue that having those programs or having autonomous gender-based institution is not necessary.
The structure of religion must be overhauled if society needs to have a better position for the woman in society. Probably in future the religion will have ‘God the Woman’ instead of the widely used ‘God the Father’ (Shaw 74). This is because as it is now, the relationship between the history of religion and feminism is awkward and very toxic. (Shaw 70).
