Forgetfulness Benny Case
In ordinary life, forgetfulness is rather prevalent. It can be difficult to retrieve information from a person's memory at times. Every day, students are taught new concepts and are expected to maintain the information in their memory. However, there is often a negative interaction between old and new information, and this is referred to as interference.
Benny will almost certainly face proactive interference. Proactive interference is one of the two main types of interference that occurs when a person's previous memories or information impede them from remembering new concepts. It usually happens during proactive learning when a person tries to learn two separate things at the same time, as Benny did. Benny is trying to learn a new language, French, and he is already fluent in another different language, Spanish. In trying to understand French, it is likely that Benny will confuse some French words with some Spanish words because of his past knowledge in Spanish.
Proactive interference occurs where there is a similarity of context. In Benny's case, the similarity of context lies in the two languages Spanish and French; both are languages used in communication. In proactive interference, the retention of new memories becomes a challenge because the old memories inhibit the new information. In learning French, which is the new information, Benny will have a difficulty to retain it because his memory already contains Spanish. Therefore, when writing or communicating in French, it is possible that Benny will use Spanish words or will remember more of Spanish words than French words.
Just as the name suggests, retrieval failure makes it a challenge for a person to remember something which was already stored in the memory. Retrieval failure interferes with a person's ability to remember or the ability to retain new information. In Benny's case, retrieval failure will interfere with his ability to retain new information when he learns French.
