FRQ - The biochemical angle
The brain is an integral and perhaps the most complex component of the human body. The hippocampus regulates all of the body's activities and senses. A strong bonny shell called the skull encloses it and preserves it. Any of the brain's psychological functions regulate both the body's emotional and behavioral processes. The brain also interprets the knowledge obtained from different parts of the body to prepare it for the appropriate response to being made. Diencephalon, cerebrum, brainstem, and cerebellum are the main brain divisions. In addition to that, for multiple body functions, separate brain systems are responsible. The brain structure and its functions is an interesting topic that has attracted many researchers and scientists studying the roles that the brain plays in the cognitive operations.
First of all, speech is controlled by two brain structures namely; Broca's area along with Wernicke’s area. The Broca’s area plays an essential role in the production of speech (Carlson 142). Damages to this structure will interfere with one's ability to form words correctly, a situation that will result in slurred speech. Wernicke's area also plays an essential role in giving the speech. Its primary function is understanding of the speech as it is vital for the speaker first to understand what he/she wants to communicate before he releases the words to the audience. In case this region is injured; the person will not be able to say words that make sense.
Also, a person’s ability to dance is controlled by a specific part of the brain called cerebellum (Rizzo 76). Before one can consider him/herself a dancer, he/she should undergo rigorous training to understand the moves that are necessary for that particular dance. When this person becomes a well-experienced dancer, cerebellum will help that person to retrieve well-learned movements without thinking (Carlson 138). It helps the performing person to move the muscles quickly, in an efficient way and without consulting the memory (Rizzo 82). With cerebellum, the dancer will not have to remember how to move the hands or feet as they will just move as required by that particular occasion.
The last activity that is controlled by specific parts of the brain is reading. The first part of the brain that is necessary for this action is Broca's area (Carlson 125). This region is located in dominant hemisphere’s frontal lobe which is usually on the left side of the hominid brain. This area controls language comprehension as well as speech production. The other part is temporal lobe which is located under the lateral fissure on both mammalian brain cerebral hemispheres (Carlson 132). This region helps in phonological consciousness as well as decoding and perceiving sounds.
In conclusion, as covered in this essay, it is clear that with each brain region, there are specific parts that perform their principal roles which help in guiding one's cognitive functions. It is with the help of the brain that humans can make sense, retrieve and organize the information they process every day with the aid of various regions of the brain that function together and sometimes independently.
