Gender Role Socialization
The Historical Problems of Women Entering Education
The education system has historically been influenced by human society, history and culture, which perceives men as having control over women, so men have always dominated the field of education. It was not until the late 1800s that, both as teachers and as students, women started to take active roles in the education system. This paper examines the historical problems of women entering education as students and teachers. It also addresses the beginning of coeducation and its causes. As pupils, schooling was mainly meant for males, and they would be placed in separate schools or classes where there were females. This is because, women were deemed intellectually inferior to men, and as such, they could not compete with men. As teachers, women always occupied subordinate positions in education, for instance, in most societies women always taught at the lower levels of education, mostly the compulsory school levels as compared to their male counterparts who dominated the higher levels of learning.
The Impact of Gender Equality Policies in Education
With the emergence of polices that advocated for gender equality in education, most conventional gender roles and stereotypes have been done away with. This has seen the proportion of females in the teaching profession in higher education levels increase. However, men still remain in charge in the school management levels at large. The idea of coeducation has also been widely embraced and this has helped in breaking the misconceptions that the males have high intellectual capacity than the females. In coeducation schools all learners have equal opportunities and explore different learning opportunities. Further, coeducational schools help in putting a stop to negative gender stereotypes and instead creates a feeling of friendship between the genders.
The Recognition of Women in the Teaching Profession
To conclude, the education domain has undergone changes and women are now becoming more and more recognised in the teaching profession. Coeducation has also challenged the gender divisions in the education system bringing about equality. In short, coeducation is a more practical way of learning.
