Genetic Engineering Breakthrough
Breakthrough in Genetic Engineering For a very long time, biologist have stuck to using the alphabets to indicate the DNA building blocks. These are Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Guanine (G), and Cytosine (C). These building blocks for the A—T and G—C pairs that are found on the DNA ladder. These genetic alphabets from the bases of all life on earth. Genetic engineers have carried out a lot of research to widen their scope on the genetic alphabets in order to raise the information storage potential of the DNA to build proteins with more unnatural bases. The expected breakthrough was in 2014 where they managed to synthesize different variants of X and Y, and were able to incorporate them into the DNA to develop a bacteria called Escherichia coli. This bacteria was able to combine six genetic alphabets to form a semisynthetic organism which had the ability of passing them on to the daughter cells. The researchers introduced the new bases in to the genes structures so that they can be part of the organism’s RNA molecules that contained the traditional bases so that they can be passed on to the daughter cells. Fortunately, the new bases introduced were read by microbes and they formed a variant green fluorescent that protein with unnatural amino acids. This addition of X and Y bases could be a breakthrough to making new drugs and other important materials as they increased the number of base codes for amino acids from 20 to 152.
Competitive Advantage for left-handed Athletes
There has been a common thinking that left-handed people have a competitive in sports over their right-handed counterparts. A new study suggests that this theory hold only for specific sports. Scientists have gathered statistical data of top 100 sport personalities over multiple sports in different sports and tabulated them according to pitch speeds. It emerged that left-handed athletes had a competitive advantage in sports that speed was of essence. Left-handed athletes are more competitive in sports like baseball, table tennis and cricket as opposed to badminton, squash and tennis which require more intervals between ball-racked and ball-bat times. This difference in player reaction times may require the right-handed players to practice more in order to adapt.
