Green Architectures and Sustainability
Sustainability and inexperienced architectures Sustainable architecture is a concept in architecture that entails minimization of the negative environmental impact of buildings via moderating the materials, energy used and construction space taken up through the buildings. It takes an approach that ensures the conservation of energy and ecology in the design and development of buildings. The essence of sustainability is to ensure that today’s architectural decisions and actions do now not negatively affect the opportunities of the generations to come. Some principles and challenges encountered in the implementation of sustainable structure include; budgetary concerns; investment in green architecture is pricey and as such the architects and their clients should strive to do what is really helpful in the long run. There is achievement of system efficiency; sound proving properties, natural heating, and cooling aspects can all be incorporated into a single structure. There is the capability to utilize renewable energy through solar panel and wind turbines among others that can be incorporated into new buildings and renovations as well. There is the utilization of green material hence conservation of the environment. Water and waste management can be implemented through techniques such as water harvesting and gray water systems. Building orientation and adaptive reuse are other benefits of green architectures (Carnevale Eustis Architects Inc., 2010).
Utilization of green product will not necessarily translate to a sustainable or energy sufficient structure. The best way to achieve a sustainable architecture that is sensitive to the environment and reduces consumption of energy over the buildings life is to adopt a program that strives to implement all the objectives of sustainable architecture. A building plan has to be sustainable from the initial consultation and early designs and if need be modifications can be made to attain sustainability.
Around the world, various architectural projects have been established and proven that sustainable architecture is possible and can be implemented successfully, for instance, the ruin academy in Taiwan and the Ford Calumet Environmental Center in Chicago. The ruin academy is a five-story building in Taiwan that organizes workshops and courses for universities in Taiwan and abroad. The interior walls have been done away with to ensure that rain trickles into the building and bamboo trees as well as vegetables can also grow in the building. The professors and the students sleep in the building on the third and fourth floor. The fifth floor has a public sauna that is among the best in the pacific. The idea is to let go of order and let nature take control through architectural design that enhances peaceful coexistence of humankind and nature (Arch Daily, 2013).
The Ford Calumet Environmental Center in Chicago utilized the nest-making model to make an architectural design and gone ahead to use readily available materials to build the center. The architects in charge went ahead to implement the concept of re-use by using steel from the Calumet industrial region and other materials that could be recycled such as glass bottles, bar stock among others. Calumet is a place of rest for migrating birds and as such, it is important that the structure is safe for the birds hence the use of bird screens to ensure their safety (Studio Gang, 2010).
In conclusion, sustainable architectural is about eliminating the negative effects of building and construction and enhancing energy conservation and promotion of green products. It is economical, safe and promotes conservation. The concept has been implemented by some architects in the world for instance through the ruin academy in Taiwan and the Ford Calumet Environmental Center in Chicago.
