Gun Control and Gun Injury
Every person has the right to possess a gun if it assures their security. Many times, this legal right to gun ownership has been questioned when considering the healthcare costs associated with gun injuries. Over the past years, proponents of gun control have argued that possession of firearms compromises environmental safety and increases gun-injury related healthcare costs. According to Lott (2013), both the proponents and the opponents of the issue in question perceive risks associated with the control. For instance, the proponents view gun ownership as a means to accidents and intentional shootings. The opponents, on the other hand, argue that too much control would potentially render law-abiding citizens vulnerable to violence. However, according to the Second Amendment, it is within an individual’s liberty to bear firearms for self-defense and the protection of their family. Therefore, the legal right to own a gun should be prioritized over any healthcare cost resulting from gun injuries.
According to Fowler (2015), gun-injury related social costs are an essential aspect of environmental safety. Therefore, any strategy of preventing gun-related injuries should be inclusive of these costs. On the other hand, an individual’s right to possess a firearm for the sake of their security should not be compromised. About the debate on gun control, both the proponents and the opponents have valid opinions on the regulation of firearm possession. In conclusion, both the individual right to gun ownership and social costs resulting from gun injuries should be conciliated when strategizing on how to prevent gun injury. This move will ensure that the views of both the proponents and the opponents of the gun control debate are considered in realizing fire-arm safety as well as reducing social costs related to gun injuries.
