This Article explains how information from the basic record of the registration of a client in the organization to the care and planning and dissemination of the records. Health Information Management involves record keeping and distribution of information. Health Information Management involves capturing information, processing information, using information, storing information and disposing of information. By Capturing Information it is created then entered into a database, recorded and so as to maintain surety sometimes records are written manually (American, H. I. M. A. A. (2015).
Processing information involves validation of the data collected, analysing and integrating the data. The use refers to exchange or sharing the data holding or retaining information. Disposing refers to permanently destroying or deleting the information.
Health Information involves health data that is collected during a period of care of an invalid. From the time a patient gets to the hospital from the written data that they give at the reception to their previous records at the hospital all these are health information. The registration, triage, assessment, testing is all a care plan which involves health information.
Health information is a hierarchy in that:
- Level 1- This is the lifetime record
- Level 2- Episode of care
- Level 3-Functions Record which includes the admission record, test record etc.
- Level 4- Record at data entry level. This form of data recording is done as per standards such as Health Level 7 (HL7), Clinical Document Architecture (CDA).
This article also has details concerning the principles that govern health information management.
Information governance
This is the accountability framework that is used by an organization to ensure that an organization efficiently and effectively uses the information to arrive at its goal without implicating or negatively impacting the clients (LaTour, K. et al, 2013). It involves rules set up by the American Record Management. The principles set up include:
- Accountability
- Transparency
- Protection
- Integrity
- Compliance
- Availability
- Disposition
- Retention
In 2014 AHIMA launched the Information Governance Initiative that was meant to adopt the principles into healthcare. Later on, a survey, was conducted on the state of information governance.
Due to this survey AHIMA developed the IG maturity model that is being piloted by health information exchange. The survey that had been undertaken is proof that the principles were the best way to ensure that inclusion and use of the principles was a good idea. The use of this principles has not only been a benefit to an organization but also to the stakeholders.
Conclusion
This article was fact-based. The use of the survey to affirm on whether the incorporation of the principles to the information management was a step to affirm the reaction with the stakeholders. Not only had this but the health information standards became more accurate and relevant. The principle of availability enables the records to be easily accessible by the information management and that the information is efficient in terms of what the client requires.
This principle also ensures that the nationwide health information network has the ability to view the results but with the confidentiality of the client-doctor relationship (American Health Information Management Association. (1990). This principle ensures that in case data from the systems is required to pursue a certain challenge or epidemic then it is made accessible to the international information network. This article requires more and in-depth study concerning the HL7 as a standardization policy.
