Honoring Someone’s Life

From historical years ago to date music was and is nevertheless is a central part of people’s life. They have comprehended its impact on the emotions of humans as well as the state of mind. Although some are just to entertain, however, musicians mostly try to relay a certain message in their songs (Mannes 11). This paper specifically shall deal with the theme of honoring someone. With many tragedies and terror attacks happening around the world, artists have chosen to utilize their music in preaching peace and honoring the victims. Others honor their loved ones dead or alive and just general people who have influences in one’s lives. I am particularly interested in this theme because I would love to honor my loved ones especially my parents who have helped and inspired me a lot.

Celine Dion is one of the greatest female artists of all time. She has managed to sell millions of records and toured the world severally. She is considered a music icon. In January 2016, she lost her husband who had battle throat cancer for a long time. A few days later, she lost her brother to cancer again.  Dion sang a song recovering to honor her late husband. She talks about starting over and gaining hope.

There are many songs honoring mothers; however, fathers rarely get honored.  Luther Vandross’ song Dance with My Father is based on his experience. He remembers childhood memories with his parents where they would dance together. This song was a tribute to his father who died when Vandross was only seven years. This is a very heartfelt song because it makes one wish they could get that one last chance to be with the person they loved the most. Luther Vandross is literally asking God to bring back his father so that they could have that one last dance. Luther Vandross was a singer who passed on in 2005 apart from being a very successful artist with many hits; he was a highly sought background vocalists for many musicians. He was awarded 8 Grammys for his works (Vandross n.p).

A Mother’s Love by Jim Brickman is another song honoring mothers.  Brickman is an American singer, pianist, and songwriter. He is also a radio host. The song in itself is self-explanatory, Brickman honors his mother and by extension all mother for the sacrifices they make when raising their children.

In my daughter’s eyes is a song sung by American country singer Martina Mariea McBride. McBride has had many hits on the billboard country charts. Additionally, she has successfully recorded 13 albums and has sold over 14 million albums. She has won awards and is a Grammy nominee. McBride has two brothers who are in her concert band and a sister. She got exposed to country music at a young age, and that is helped her love singing. At nine years of age, she started singing in a band formed by her father. She got married to John McBride in 1988 and together they have three daughters McBride (“Martina Mcbride." Biography.com. N.p). In my daughter’s eyes is honoring her daughters and praising them on how they give her strength to press on in life. She says that her daughters are a reflection of who she is and actually this is true in actuality. Daughters are seen as their mothers’ reflection.

Soldiers sacrifice a lot in the line of duty to ensure the security of the country. Many sacrifice their personal lives, normally at the expense of their families. They risk their lives, and some do not see their families for years. Many have lost their lives in the process particular those who go to a war zone. It is therefore paramount that the men and women in uniform are honored and appreciated for their sacrifices.  "For You" by Keith Urban is a song done by the Australian country singer honoring men in uniform. It talks about a soldier who has a pregnant wife at home but sacrifices his life and takes a bullet for his fellow soldier. There is a gun fire, and in the process, he takes the bullet for his colleague. He understands that these are the sacrifices that come with their line of job and his comrades would have done the same for him too. These are some of the heroic acts these men in uniform carry out. The unborn child shall clearly never see his father, and this is what is happening to soldier’s families. This song manages to convey the theme of honoring since it acknowledges the struggles and sacrifices of soldiers and their families.

“Only in America” Brooks & Dunn talks of how people dream big in the United States of America. This is a patriotic song honoring the people of America and the country. Just after 9/11 attacks, the song was a widely played in the radios as a ray of hope followings this incident. I the song would also later be adopted by President George W. Bush as his theme song during his campaigns as he sought a second term.

Music indeed does invoke people emotions, and as seen in this playlist, the songs have managed to successfully convey the theme of honoring someone or a country, and the message is brought out perfectly. This is a fascinating playlist as it encompasses many aspects. It honors a country, a soldier, a child, father, and mothers as well as a spouse.  These are probably the most important persons in everyone’s lives.
