Hopkins Local Initiative and the Construction of the $1.1 Billion Hopkins Hospital Building
This is an economic event established through a collaboration between John Hopkins University and the Hopkins Clinic. The program’s objective was to secure more construction contracts with local and external sponsors. More importantly, the initiative’s goal was to attract investors to John Hopkin College and Hospital. To promote economic growth, the idea was also initiated to create job opportunities to community members.
One of the most incredible projects that was pushed by the program was the $ 1.1 billion Hopkins Hospital building (Johns Hopkins Hospital, 2016). The facility contained expanded food-ordering options, increased number of staff and valet parking facilities. The football-field-sized entrance and the $ 1.6 million tetragonal reception facility was sponsored by a number of dignitaries including United Arab Emirates President Khalif Bin Zayed and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The hospital Bloomberg Children Center contains 205 quarters and ten surgery suites that were constructed specifically for neonatal intensive care and ICU for children.
The project also advocates for participation of the minority and women in promoting awareness and application of job opportunities in local governmental institutions. Moreover, the initiative championed for increased hiring of city residents in support growth and retention of underrepresented employees. The two institutions have increased outreach to business and they have encouraged them to engage in competitive bidding processes (Johns Hopkins Hospital, 2016).
Advancing biomedical education through hands-on training and mentorship of Physicians, Nurses and Other Healthcare Professionals
Access to healthcare and quality services through better education - Maryland benefits from the Clinic’s role in providing educational opportunities for its professionals. The institute plays a role in training physicians and nurses in the medical emerging technologies. The clinic’s school of medical imaging offers full-time and college level programs in nuclear and diagnostic solography. More specialized training is offered in CT scanning and mammography. Additionally, John Hopkins School of Nursing contribute to the development of its workforce.
In 2009, the School of Medicine introduced a new curriculum that enabled medical students to study and avoid interacting with patients at numerous settings. By 2010, 1684 graduates had passed through the program (Dang et al., 2017). The clinic also sponsors graduate medical education. Residents can enroll in these programs and in turn, they would be required to provide much needed physician workforce. Moreover, continual medical education (CME) programs help medical professionals to improve their skills and better the outcomes of patients. For instance in the last fiscal year, the hospital offered 864 CME programs and other educational events which led to a total enrolment of 62,658.
Health Information management and technological developments
Hopkin’s hospital health information management system comprises of heath IT professionals who play crucial roles in improving the quality of health care in the hospital. The hospital’s HIM system analyzes and secures data in order to provide indicators of health risk behavior. The use of technology in the hospital has reduced healthcare costs and enhanced better health outcomes. The clinic’s HIM ensures that staff members are informed 24/7.
One emerging trend by the hospital was the launch of the Capacity Command Center that automated hospital operations. The state of the art facility was designed by GE healthcare in partnership with JHMI (Dang et al. 2017). It combines latest engineering systems and uses predictive analytics to enhance patient safety, enable greater access and control doctor-patient schedules. It monitors a number of factors including ambulance pickup, patient transfers, enhances emergency response and approves patient discharges. The facility also provides real-time information about the patient.
