Imbalanced Sex Ratios, Men’s Sexual Behavior, and Risk of Sexually Transmitted Infection in China
The paper concerned examines the ties between men's sexual conduct, the increase in transmission of sexual diseases and the consequent inequality of sex among China's citizens. Below are some of the highlighted criteria for an overview of the paper. Purpose: The central goal of the study is to examine the relationship between local sex and the many aspects of the sexual and sexual wellbeing of the Chinese men. The authors of this paper tried to find the connections between the sexual activity of men and the sexually passed infections that resulted.Theoretical Framework: The article is an empirical article and it uses some theories, hypotheses and also some of the research questions. The article uses the hypothesis which is derived from the demographic-opportunity theory. The prime ground of the demographic-opportunity theory is that the availability of the large number of opposite-sex members increases the likelihood of making the cross-sex relationship e.g. marriage or pre-marital relationship. The theory also suggests that the men’s sexual behavior in being engaged in intercourse (noncommercial) is moved up by the large number of female available to the men in concern. On the contrary, the men’s intention in getting engaged in sexual relationship shrinks with the decreased number of available female around those men. Another hypothesis that the authors make in this research article is that the less the availability of the women around men, the more the men will likely want to get them engaged with commercial sexual relationship. The third hypothesis that the study makes is that the less number of women will probably diminish the rate of sexually transmitted infections among the people concerned.
Methods: The data sets that the article use is the data derived from Chinese Health and Family Life Survey (CHFLS). The article also takes the three Chinese censuses into consideration. The research takes various criteria for selecting the sample size. After applying various sampling criteria, the sample size of the research becomes 1,023 men and the amount of respondents within the communities ranges from 5 to 142, having a mean of 28. In this article, there are some dependent and independent variables. Descriptive statics are also used in this article. The study uses the multilevel logistic regression model to understand the dependence of the variables to one another.
Results: One of the major findings of the study is that the numerical shortage of women is likely to escalate the likelihood of men for being engaged in the in commercial sex. Such reduction in number of the women available to the men will likely to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Conclusions: The research emphasizes on the significance of the macro level social-structural features such as the population distributions for determining the sexual behaviors and their outcomes.
Implications: The analysis leads attention to the most important factors such as the causal chain, the underscoring how more distal features of the social situation also influence these behaviors. So, in this sense, the article will likely to assist informing the macro-micro connection in the study of the individual health behavior and the other health-related status.
Discussion Questions:
1. What are the consequences of the imbalanced sex ratios for men’s and women’s sexual health behavior in other Asian countries like in India or Bangladesh?
2. What are implications and consequences of premarital sexual relationships on the increase of STIs?
