Implementation of an Electronic Health Information System
There have been increased calls for better healthcare services. Besides, this has seen the development and introduction of new healthcare systems for a better provision of healthcare services. For such information system to be successful, there has to be an ample environment that will support proper implementation and success. This paper will consider implementation of Electronic Health/ Patient Record (EHR) System that allows capturing and storage of patient’s data electronically.
There are various internal and external key players involved in the process of implementing the information system. Taking external players, the federal government and other regulatory bodies fall under this category. There may be established policies that will affect or determine the implementation of healthcare information systems. They involve issues regarding privacy and confidentiality patient and institutional information. Internal role players play an essential role in information system implementation. A positive internal environment will support and ensure the success of the information system (Sharma & Yetton, 2003). When the management is in support of system implementation, there is a high likelihood of success and acceptance, which in turn creates a sign of institutional progress.
End users have to be considered in the whole process of project development and implementation. The primary reason for this is because they determine whether the information system is acceptable or it will meet resistance in its adoption. End users define the system's environment since they are familiar with the application practices in which the system is used. Therefore, they determine how the system is designed and implemented. Since Information systems are perceived to reduce control over user's work, Baronas a[G14] nd Louis states that when the end users are given a chance to enhance perceived control over the system during system implementation, they readily adapt to changes and are ready to accept the system (Baronas & Louis, 1988).
Implementation of Information system will see an organization adopting a competitive edge over their competitors. Implementation of the system means that the business will gain a competitive advantage regarding innovation, improved communication, and reduced cost of operation (Porter & Millar, 1985). Implementation of the information system will ensure there is enhanced access to information which in turn results to informed and fast decision making. The information system will also allow easy and rapid communication among the stakeholders, leading to an excellent customer experience. The cost of operation will also be lowered since there is reduced paperwork, this increases the organization profit margin.
