In Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes starts by taking note
Descartes begins with meditations about first philosophy by finding that a lot exists which he assumed to be valid at one point but which he learned to be not true. It causes him to be concerned about any other conviction he thinks is incorrect. He says that similar illusions have misled him in many sleep cases and, as he thinks upon them, he sees so plainly that there are no signs that clearly distinguish between sleep and awakening. Descartes therefore wants the Dream Claim to show that although he is conscious that his senses often trick him, and therefore he cannot trust their achievements. The Dream Argument states that when one dreams, then they have some kind of an experience. Descartes argues that if the experience one had when dreaming was by its own nature a dependable source of knowledge then when he dreams he is hitting a home run then he would really be doing so. However, when he dreams it, he is not really doing it (hitting the home run). According to him, the same feeling that one has when dreaming is the same experience that one has when awake. It means that that kind of experience is not a dependable source of knowledge even one is awake.
Dreaming is often used as a critical evidence for doubtful hypothesis that all we believe today may just be false and created by a dream. Therefore, Descartes too uses the Dream Argument explains that beliefs that are justified by our senses are bound to be doubted. It is the same argument that Descartes uses in resolving to no longer believe his senses perhaps till further notice.
