A very puzzling series of questions are raised by choosing where, how, and where to use military action for action. Due to this, the American government has been tempted to use military force in surrounding regions of the globe.
Through its history, America has encountered situations where military intervention was forcefully used. Such an application of force must receive approval from the government’s legislative branch. Buchanan (2010), asserts that the cause for declaring war must be determined by a tangible proof that an attack or threat on the nation is impending Military force is also allowed when a nation uses unusual weapons against its own people or opponents. The Middle East is commonly known for this practice. For instance, in 2014, the choice by President Obama to request permission from the congress to bomb Syria was vindicated since Syria Air Force used chemical weapons and sarin gas on their own citizens during their civil war (Williamson, 2009). As a result of the use unusual weapons, the country witnessed thousands of deaths, civilian injuries and displacement of a huge population of individuals.
Furthermore, after the attack of September 11, 2001, America used military force in Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda. During that time, America engaged Iraq in war in 2003 following the deceiving information that Saddam Hussein was in possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) (Williamson, 2009).
Nonetheless, forceful military intervention yields some serious consequences. It usually results into a lengthy armed dispute which worsens an already tense condition. Unlike a political strategy, armed conflicts rarely reach an intended goal. Acquiring arms in whatever situation leads to loss of lives, materials and creates human tragedy. Because both fighting sides impose causalities on each side, winning becomes surreal. Looking on the other side, a backdated observation in the history of America indicates that that the application of forceful military force can be actually be justified (Buchanan, 2010). One clear illustration was the sudden attack on the Hawaii’s Japanese Pearl Harbor in 1941 that forced America to participate in World War II. The war ended brutally and tragically.
For once in history, the US stroked Hiroshima and Nagasaki with an atomic bomb (Williamson, 2009). Those Japanese urban centers were completely damaged and causalities from the incidence had permanent scars of the phenomenon for long. The then Japanese Emperor, Hirohito, finally conceded. Consequently, the war came to an end. The US won, however the war resulted into a huge loss of materials and human lives, making the victory unclear. Against this background, the justification of forceful military intervention does not make engaging in war the best approach of addressing personal or world issues. Instead it makes them worse. The political approach is usually the recommended way to consider since it fulfils to a great extent the dreams of the two opposing sides. On the contrary, the attackers do not look for any justification for their forceful military use, provided the aggression fulfils their ambitions. However, without an attack or threat, military force would not be required and bloodshed would be avoided.
