International Exhibition of Contemporary Art
The 1913 International Exhibition of Contemporary Art exhibit was coordinated by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors as the expansive pioneer demonstration of cutting-edge artistic expression. The exhibition was hosted throughout three cities. It started New York City at the 69th Regiment Armory, proceeded to the Art Institute of Chicago, and had its final displaying at Copley Hall in Boston. The experimental art pieces of the Fauves and Cubists European artists was once a disruptive force given the fact that Americans had been accustomed to realistic art. Matisse’s Blue Nude and Duchamp’s Nude Descending Staircase were amongst the important paintings of severa works by artists from Germany, France, and other European countries.
Upon its closure on March 15th, the exhibition was a success having drawn large audiences comprising the general public, artist, and other high-profile individuals from across the states. The show had given prominent attention to European art which in turn provoked criticism from the press and members of the public. While the media was concerned about the individualistic perspectives of the artists, the general public was concerned with the potentially dangerous morality portrayed in the unconventional European works of art. Conservative art instructors from institutions of art in New York even encouraged student reaction. Another effect was that American artistx were consequently split into two groups: the conservative realists and revolutionary modernists.

Although the Armory did not motivate a change in the style of American painters, the exhibition rendered the American public, collectors, and patrons of art exhibitions more receptive to modern European art. The Armory hence inspired transition of American art into modernist abstraction in place of American realism.
