Interpersonal Communication in Terms of Family
The greater things change, the more they remain the same especially when it comes to verbal exchange in families. One of the key concepts of interpersonal communication mirrored in the videos is respect in the family. WSJ Work & Family Columnist, Sue Shellenbarger notes that admire is fundamental in family verbal exchange even in the era of technological development the place family members decide to use texting as a means of communication greater often than not. According to Shellenbarger, it is not clever to yell or criticize when communicating. In the video, the parents use character assaults while addressing Billie’s incidence – something the singer (their child) is no longer happy about. Later on, when the father dies of the virus, the mother also finds herself in a difficult situation and has nothing much to do about it.
Another important concept of interpersonal communication is appropriate timing. Bad news or difficult conversations should never be started during meal times or before sleep as children are likely to be disrupted. For instance, the news from the Choctaw Ridge about Billie Joe jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge causes a lot of disruption (Gentry, 2014). Furthermore, interpersonal communication calls for appropriate channels in approaching children with difficult conversations. Using the right channel is useful in avoiding emotional overwhelming among the family members and even in contributing effectively in getting the teens open up to conversations. As reflected in the video, the mother’s approach in disclosing the news about Billie is inappropriate, and nothing seems to have changed despite the series of events in the singer’s family - the brother gets married, the father dies of a virus, and it is a usual business despite the troubled singer.
Lastly, the ability to feel the control and express one's opinions is critical in interpersonal communication. Shellenbarger says that texting enables children to express themselves and control making it easy to start difficult conversations (Rivero, 2015). However, such approaches should then be followed by face to face communications. The family life continues, and there is no focus on the disturbing matter, something which makes the singer lacks the freedom to express her opinions or control what is happening. Consequently, everything remains the same despite the happenings in the family.
