Interracial Communication in US
Evidence attests that the US population continues to grow and become extra and more diverse in phrases of race. Irrespectively, the perception that the US is a boiling pot where residents shed their racial, ethnic and cultural past has been nullified today, the US is viewed as a gumbo when it comes to racial composition. This has superimposed the significance of inter-racial communication aimed at distributing information between the one-of-a-kind cultures and races within a nation. What struck the most in multiracial communication is multiracial speak. Unlike erroneously believed in the past, dialogue is significantly specific from “frank conversation,” “honest expression” or “good communication.” It requires that participants foster a caring and supportive environment in which genuineness, mutual equality, empathy, unconditional positive reward and understanding are maintained (Orbe and Harris 19). Importantly, the establishment of enabling environment for a dialogue to take place includes addressing the existing power differences by empowering individuals that enter into the dialogue with less social, organizational or personal powers than others in the dialogue.
To evaluate the prerequisite of an effective dialogue, the course offers six elements that the author feels are crucial to the promotion of a dialogue. These include connection, commitment over time, realness and engagement of mind, heart and soul (Orbe and Harris 19). When making a dialogue in an interracial context, it is important that parties to the dialogue recognize that their different races are connected and that their past, present and future are intricately tied together. Parties must have an understanding of how they shared their history since it is the past connections that significantly inform present interactions. The different races must also be committed to time; they must recognise dialogue as a process in which all parties are actively involved, and which does not have an end or a beginning. Further, parties must develop genuineness and honesty while engaging in dialogues (Orbe and Harris 19). Genuineness and honesty will ensure that parties’ keep it real even while dialoguing about issues that may cause tension. Moreover, for a successful dialogue, parties must strive to create or maintain a space whereby the opinion of others is respected and valued. There has to be the engagement of the mind for logic and reasoning, as well as the heart and soul for emotional output. Finally, it is crucial that participants undertake self-reflection to situate themselves culturally, professionally and personally within the context of the communication. Self-reflection helps in understanding relevance of their lived experience in perceptions of self and others, thus promoting informed dialogues (Orbe and Harris 19).
In retrospection, a dialogue is more than “frank conversation,” “honest expression” or “good communication,” it requires creation of a genuine and honest environment that promotes understanding. For every dialogue, especially that which occurs in a multiracial setting, the participants to realise their past, present and future connections, commitment over time to realise that dialogue has no end nor a beginning, genuineness and honesty, a space where opinions of all parties are heard and respected. Further, such dialogues must and more importantly, a self-reflection to help the arties understand the relevance of lived experience. The analysis of the elements requisite in a dialogue especially in a multicultural setting is quite helpful to individuals living in multicultural settings such as America. The discussion would go a long way in promoting the creation of an enabling environment to conduct dialogues, instead of seeing them as mere frank conversations and honest expressions.
